REACH 2018 Roadmap published

ECHA has published its REACH 2018 Roadmap, which outlines the Agency’s milestones planned in the run up towards the final REACH registration deadline. The last registration deadline for existing chemicals will be on 31 May 2018. The deadline concerns companies that manufacture or import substances in low volumes, between 1-100 tonnes per year.

Alternatives to animal testing

According to ECHA’s tri-annual report on the use of alternatives to animal testing, registrants have widely used alternative methods to generate information required by REACH to ensure the safe use of chemicals. Most registrants conform –with the data sharing obligations and industry has increasingly used in vitro methods, and predicted substance properties by read-across.

ECHA has launched a project to develop more content for the web section targeted to the general public. The Chemicals in our Life web section aims to give information about the hazards of chemicals, how they affect citizens and the objectives and impact of the European chemicals legislation.

Review supports ECHA’s strategic objectives

The REACH review, published by the European Commission, reports on the regulation’s effect and makes recommendations to reinforce ECHA’s long term strategic objectives. The Commission acknowledges ECHA’s achievements during the first challenging years of its existence but recommends that the Agency further improves its efficiency and effectiveness. This aspect is covered by ECHA’s fourth strategic objective.

ECHA publishes registration statistics

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is now publishing detailed statistics on the origin and types of REACH registration dossiers and registered substances. ECHA is publishing this information to respond to enquiries received from stakeholders on the progress of the registration process. The Agency hopes that by publishing the origin and types of the registrations received it is more transparent and accessible to all.

ECHA´s new guide for downstream users provides tips for checking whether the uses and use conditions of a chemical substance are covered by exposure scenarios provided by suppliers on the Safety Data Sheet. It includes advice on the action to take based on the outcome of this check.
